The Pius Hospital in Oldenburg is the largest Catholic hospital in north-western Germany. With 13 clinics, university medical departments, and state-of-the-art configuration, the hospital supplies between 60,000 and 76,000 patients each year. In recent years, key areas have undergone extensive modernisation, including the intensive care units, the central operating theatre, the outpatient surgery centre and the new F-Wing, which was completed in 2021. The ongoing construction phases are upgrading the hospital site and bringing the infrastructure into line with modern medical requirements.
Due to the ongoing expansion and refurbishment work – particularly around the old and new central operating theatres and intensive care unit – Pius Hospital had to ensure the safe operation of its drinking water installation under dynamic site conditions whilst continuing to provide patient care. This critical environment places the highest demands on drinking water hygiene. Temporary pipe routing, phased shutdowns, and altered system hydraulics increase the risk of stagnation, temperature fluctuations, and subsequent hygiene issues. At the same time, the phased commissioning of the new F-Wing and the refurbishment of older areas required continuous safeguarding and transparent monitoring of all relevant processes within the drinking water installation.
Permanently ensuring drinking water hygiene and operational reliability at a major facility like the Pius Hospital requires a coordinated integration of backflow prevention devices, efficient hot water heaters, automated flushing for stagnation prevention, measurement technology, and hydraulic balancing technology. As a single-source supplier, KEMPER delivered a comprehensive drinking water hygiene concept that reliably meets all of the hospital's specific requirements.
Carrying out construction work while the facility remained fully operational was an immense challenge. Thanks to KEMPER’s system solutions, we were able to safeguard drinking water hygiene at all times. We were particularly impressed by the consistent temperature maintenance and the precise regulation functions.
